2008 Research: Acupuncture Boosts IVF Success, published in British Medical Journal (BMJ) ©
In February 2008, a research published in British Medical Journal (BMJ) confirmed that the effects of adjuvant acupuncture on in vitro fertilization are significant and clinically relevant.
The results have emerged from a meta-analysis, a technique in which the results of many previous trials are pooled. A team led by Dr. Eric Manheimer of the University of Maryland School of Medicine scanned medical literature for trials that attempted to measure the effect of acupuncture on IVF success.
The analysis pools results from seven studies on 1,366 women in the United States, Germany, Australia and Denmark who were undergoing IVF. The team reported that almost all these trials have reported positive findings. Taken together they showed a 65% increase in establishment of pregnancy, an 87% increase in continuing pregnancy, and a 91% increase in live births.
